2022-2023 Jazz Band Audition Information/Material

THE WVHS JAZZ PROGRAM ACCEPTS ALL STUDENTS - THERE ARE NO CUTS!
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
​Auditions are required for appropriate placement and/or seating in Jazz I/II.

JAZZ BAND AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28TH!  
FIRST REHEARSAL WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH!


WAYNE VALLEY JAZZ BAND 
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

1. Scales (everyone but drum set): 
  • ​All students are required to play three (3) blues scales. 
  • Scales will be randomly selected during your audition.
  • **NEW** All students are required to play a chromatic scale that represents their range ability.  
    • Student will select starting note, and play a chromatic scale in as many octaves as they can, that accurately represents how low AND high they can play on their instrument.​ ​
2. Solo:
  • All students are required to play the "Swing" and "Latin" excerpt.  
  • NO BRASS PLAYERS SHOULD TAKE THE "LEAD" OPTION
  • The "Ballad" excerpt is NOT required.
  • Students are expected to perform the etude(s) as close to the marked tempo as possible.

3. Improv (everyone but drum set):
  • All students are required to play one (1) 12-bar improv over an F-Blues track.

Percussion

Along with the etude above, all drum-set auditionees must demonstrate rhythmic and "groove" competency by performing each musical style below for 20-30 seconds in their audition video.
Typical ensemble format is as follows, but is subject to change dependent on available instrumentation:
